What kind of rope is best for bondage?

The bondage rope you should use depends on the complexity and purpose of the bondage. If it’s for getting aesthetic pictures, silk, satin, and nylon ropes make the most sense.

If it’s for shibari or other complicated rope art, jute ropes should be your first choice. Beginners preferring comfort should go for a cotton rope like the Calexotics Scandal.

How do I tie a safe knot for restraint play?

Make sure your knots aren’t too tight. While your submissive shouldn’t necessarily be able to move much, it shouldn’t be impossible to get out of if they want to with force.

What safety precautions should I take with rope bondage?

If your partner is tied up, always keep them in line of sight. You want to be able to untie them the moment they want to get out. Keep scissors close by in case you can’t unravel the rope by hand.

What is the difference between cotton and jute ropes?

Cotton ropes are comparatively elastic and soft. They don’t leave a mark on the skin. Jute ropes are rougher and aren’t stretchable, so they make for good suspension tools.

Can ropes cause injury during use?

If the ropes are too tight, they can cut off blood circulation. You might also bruise from a tight knot, though some people like the marks on their skin.

  • Material: If you want to avoid bruises, go for cotton. If you want memorable pictures, go for nylon or silk. And if you’re planning on practicing shibari, go for jute. 
  • Length: If you’re planning to use the rope for shibari or other complicated full-body bondage, you want the length to be 30 to 32 feet minimum, like the Tantus Onyx. 
  • Softness vs. Durability: If you want your rope to be soft, cotton and silk are the obvious choices. But if you prefer durability, nylon and jute rope last longer.
